There’s a limit to one’s tolerance. I’ve reached mine, so it’s time to go. It just isn’t worth it ~ to carry on for the sake of pride, bond repayment & employment record at the expense of my overall well-being. I don’t want to end up a nervous wreak, fleeing at the sight of umbrellas, shivering & crying when people open umbrellas in front of me. It’s irrational, mad behavior. Every smile then was forced & fake. Life was meaningless there.
I had a wonderful team working with me, but that alone isn’t enough to lift my spirits. And I had to deal with the other team who gives me nothing but trouble. I was just miserable there. Family & friends cheered me up momentarily. The rest was up to me. Being unhappy and troubled meant I became more temperamental than usual, and that affected my relationship. I started quarrels with my bf over trivial matters, just because I’m feeling frustrated with everything.
Initially I rejected the opportunity to resign (in May) because I wanted to go through all the s*** with the guides. I didn’t want to affect the already low morale there. And I hoped to be there for them. But after many incidents at work, I realized it’s useless. After so long, they’ve learnt to cope with it despite the low morale. And I’d say some of them just aren’t worth my care & concern. My departure wouldn’t affect them much since they’ve found their own sources of support. As for those I care for, I’d continue to do so from Singapore.
I spoke to my manager in June about my resignation, and I returned to Singapore on 13 July. I announced it to my team on 8 July. They were shocked but happy for me. Everyone can’t wait to leave, but for various reasons they are still there. On 9 July I announced to the other team, who reacted with shock & dissuaded me from resigning because of the costs involved ~ I had to pay a huge sum for breaking the bond. But there’s no turning back. And I’ve no wish of turning back.
My 2nd last day was the most memorable. We wore our yukata & took lots of photos before going for sushi dinner together. The night before I left we had a simple home-cooked dinner together. And that’s it ~ my last night in Japan, as a Spore Pavilion guide (read: Slave). I couldn’t get to sleep that night…probably too excited about going home. It’s such a big contrast when I left Japan in December last year, when I was so sad about leaving, that I cried myself to sleep.
I do not regret taking up this job. Yes, it was tough emotionally, mentally & physically. And my Japanese proficiency didn’t improve at all. However I did gain from this work experience ~ how to lead a team, deal with our manager & the stupid management up there, interacting with people from all walks of life. In addition I had the opportunity to travel ~ Takayama, Ise-shima, Kagoshima. But I guess my biggest gain from this job is the chance to meet my boyfriend. If not for this Expo, I wouldn’t have had the chance to meet him (through my internet friend). But no, contrary to what many suggest, I wouldn’t stay till end of Expo just for the sake of being in Japan with him. Coz he’s in Kagoshima, which is very far from the Expo (12 hrs by bus from Osaka, add in another 4 hrs from Osaka to Expo). Considering the distance & cost, I might as well maintain our relationship from Singapore!
I’m waiting for my ex-colleagues to send me photos of the Expo coz I didn’t take much over there. I’d post them here one day, to let you see the place & our working/living conditions. We don’t call ourselves slaves for nothing!

Work updates
This Blog’s alive again!!
Not been updating this blog since my trip coz I’ve been tired & not really in the mood to write. Right after the trip I was on morning shift…dead tired! When I thought I could find time to write during my off day, I was too tired to do so and slept the day away. I’m still in process of writing about the 4-day trip coz no mood to write for that topic yet…Anyway, just a quick update on the usual topics at work:
Workload
Life at work now is slightly better after some changes were done to the way we let visitors in. We can now afford to work with less manpower & yet not feel too stretched. We had a meeting with the Pavilion director 2 days ago & she wanted to have feedback on how to improve the pavilion. 1-2 months ago, I’d be very enthusiastic & try to think of ways to improve, but now? I just can’t be bothered, esp. when they take 1-2 months to implement whatever we suggest… so if we suggest something now, by the time it’s implemented, the Expo would have ended.
Work Politics
There’re still some politics at work ~ A dun like B, C quarrel with D, E dislikes team etc… Haiz… as if life at work isn’t bad enough, these people still want to make life worse with all these conflicts. I wash my hands off this. They can quarrel & fight their cold wars, I can’t be bothered.
Team members
My team member cum roommate was very ill last week and was sent back to S’pore within days. It’s sad because we’ve been working & staying together for 3 months, and all of a sudden she has to go back. I miss cursing the visitors with her, talking nonsense with her…
2 days ago a new colleague joined our team to replace her. He’s a 21-year-old Japanese guy whom we affectionately call “Ah-Boy” coz he’s the youngest in our team, like a younger brother to us. He’s coping well with the work, but the poor boy is quite lonely in our team of girls who don’t really have much to talk to him. It’s not that we don’t want to talk to him, but there’re no common topics. We’re now trying ways to assimilate him into the team through team meals & doing small talk whenever we can. Hope things will get better after a week or so.
Love at work
If you’ve missed watching the drama “Desperate Housewives”, you can always tune in to Channel “Singapore Pavilion” to watch “Desperate Guides”! This love drama here is very interesting ~ A likes B, C/D/&E seems to like B too. No one knows who B likes. Suspected rivals are being watched constantly. Gossips are spreading like wildfire. Things are becoming bitchy… Hmm…maybe I should rename this as “The S’pore Bachelor” instead. Coz it’s the usual case of one “cannot make it” bachelor with many desperate girls fighting for his attention… hahaha.. And you know wat? I used to be a suspected rival in “The Spore bachelor” and the thot of it really irritated me. I had already declared that the bachelor is not my type & I have someone else more eligible than him in mind, but people still treat me as rival. *rolls eyes* Guess when a person is obsessed with another, she can’t think rationally anymore…
Another drama to look out for is “The Jerk?”. There’s this guy at work who seems to be after girl X, but also after girl Y as well. Both girls apparently aren’t aware of this, so it’s going be interesting to observe what’s going to happen in months to come… Wonder if there’d be another cat-fight in addition to what we’d see on “The S’pore Bachelor”.
I’m not bothered with who ends up with whom, or who’s killed in the fight coz it really has nothing to do with me. Especially when it comes to relationships, it’s not up to outsiders to interfere. And I believe strongly that if it’s meant to be, it will be. There is no point in trying to check out suspected rivals & getting rid of them. If a guy has someone in mind, he wouldn’t be interested in the rest unless he’s a jerk. As for the 2 girls in “The Jerk?” drama, it will definitely turn out to be a tragedy for one or maybe both of them. It’s sad, but we are talking about a suspected jerk here.
One drama that ended its run here is “The 2-timer girl”. The main actress has a boyfriend in S’pore & Japan. So while we see the girl being so in love in Japan, we also get to see her much more in love look when her S’pore boyfriend contacts her. It seems like the guy here is winning the girl, but she’s just returned to S’pore while he has to stay put here. Probably we’ve to return to S’pore to catch Part-2 of this drama…
The above are the more interesting dramas that keep us entertained at work everyday. We’ve only 3 more months to go….so I guess the drama plots will get thicker as desperate girls make their last desperate efforts to win the bachelor, the jerk trying to fool around & the possibility of the girls finding out about him…
That’s all for work updates for now…

I'm in Love
I’ve finally found my Mr Right, in the form of Teru from Kyushu (Kagoshima). It’s unexpected for me. I liked someone else then, but when he came along, I realized he’s the one for me. Maybe what people say “what’s yours will be yours” is really true after all…We had met at the Expo in mid-April when he came with my Japanese internet friend. I had a good impression of him coz he’s quite mild-mannered and had a sense of humor. I was pleasantly surprised when he gave me a bangle bought from the South Africa pavilion the day he left for Kagoshima.
About 2 weeks later he started to sms me daily and sent me a letter with our photos taken at the Expo. And he invited me to go to Kagoshima. I had actually wanted to save my money & off-days for a long trip to Hokkaido in summer, but decided to make the trip to Kagoshima. It was going to cost a bomb & the time taken would kill, but I went ahead with it anyway.
Just before the trip I felt excited yet uncertain. I don’t know this guy well and now I’m going all the way to Kagoshima to meet him and stay at his home for 3 nights. Not sure if we could get along well during my 4 days there…
The trip turned out to my happiest trip in Japan ever… We connected immediately despite the language barrier. It’s as if we were already a couple on a trip rather than 2 friends. We are quite alike in character & have similar likes & dislikes. Our choice of songs (save for GLAY) & food are similar too. I felt very comfortable in his presence… I could be my usual crazy self, playing with my soft-toy, talk nonsense, eat like a pig…all with him around without feeling too conscious of myself.
He’s a very cute & sweet guy. And romantic too! He’d often do funny poses for me when I want to take photos of him. I’m very touched when I realized he’s always looking out for me. There was once when we went to a waterfall and had to walk on steep, uneven steps. He was in front of me, and he kept turning back after 1-2 steps to make sure that I’m ok. On my 2nd night, he brought me to a place to see fireflies. That was the first time we held hands, but it’s just to ensure that I dun fall into the river. I didn’t feel awkward when we were close to each other….I feel very safe, loved and protected with him around.
We continued sms each other on a daily basis after the trip. I started to miss him very much. He’s preparing for a university entrance exam & all I had in mind was what to give him to encourage him. I wanted to make lots of paper stars for him. I wanted him to be happy, to know that there’s always someone to cheer him on. That’s when I realized that I’m falling for him…
I started to drop him hints but he often wouldn’t reply on that. Almost a week after the trip, I couldn’t take it anymore and asked him about it. That’s when he confessed his feelings for me. He always didn’t reply me because he wasn’t sure of his future plans. I guessed he wanted to have a more stable career before getting attached. And at his age (he’s 30), attached equals to marriage. I almost burst into tears after I saw his reply. After all I’ve gone thru the past few years, I’ve finally found the one, and he reciprocates but yet we can’t be together.
My immediate reply to him was that I would wait for him. I never considered the consequences of having to wait for him, the obstacles awaiting us. I just wanted to wait for him. I want to be there for him when he works towards his dream. I don’t mind what I have to go through, as long as he’s happy. I was overjoyed when he replied positively. We didn’t say anything official about being together, but it’s understood by us that we’re an item from then on. I guess when a couple feels strongly for each other, an official statement by either party to become a couple isn’t needed anymore.
I’m very much in love with him. I’m not sure when he’d achieve his dream of becoming a doctor, but I’d stand by his side. I know there’s a very long way ahead of us that’s filled with lots of obstacles. Though I’m not sure if I can pull thru this journey, I know he’d always be there to help me pull thru it. He’s a very optimistic person, so different from a pessimistic me. Yet we are similar, in that we’d try to achieve our dreams despite the obstacles. And that’s what I find most attractive about him ~ that he dares to dream & works towards achieving his dreams.
My family just found out about this relationship. There’re no objections from my parents yet, and my siblings are very encouraging. My close friends are very happy for me. One of them even remarked that I look radiant with a glow on my face now! Haha…. Though they are surprised that we started this relationship so soon, they understand that as long as both parties like each other, it doesn’t matter whether they’ve known each other for days or years.
It’s been almost 3 weeks since we started. I miss him very much & am always thinking of how we can meet up soon, instead of 3 months later when the Expo ends. But time & cost is a problem… Haiz, we are in the same country yet can’t meet each other ~ so near yet so far… Guess I must try much harder to get a job in Japan now to avoid long-distance relationship…

More job woes?
My friend who's been reading my blog asked me for an update on the work politics here. Well, there isn't much to update for now. The work schedule issue is still on hold. I guess the suggested changes will only be implemented in next month's schedule.
As for the 2 teams, no fights or unhappiness for the time being. *cross my fingers* Due to one member going on leave, we had some slight changes in the team members. A pair of sisters who were initially in different teams ended up in my team. That's a problem coz they are so close they must always be together. The younger sister is replacing the team member on leave, so of course i would expect her to take that team member's work station. And it happens to be the opposite station of her elder sister, meaning when the elder sister is at position 1, the younger sister will be at position 4, so they will seldom be working together and will exchange postitions at break times.
I know they aren't happy when i didn't allow them to be stationed together nor let them go for meals/breaks together. But work is work, u can't always expect to be with your relative or friend at work. And it's very common in companies where relatives are placed in different departments or teams deliberately. However i would try to be flexible sometimes , e.g. when one of us was on MC & the work station positions had to be adjusted to cope with the manpower shortage.
Talking about manpower shortage, we are the pitiful team with only 6 members (the other team has 7) & we have to depend on the manager's personal assistant to cover us for meal breaks. We usually can cope with just 5 persons by getting one person to cover 2 work stations. But our stupid manager insisted that there must be one person for each station, so he said his PA will cover for us during breaks. But his stupid PA is always late in coming to cover us for breaks, making my members very pissed off. Recently one of them was hopping mad when he didn't come to cover us for lunch on time, so she shouted into the walkie-talkie, ordering him to report to the station immediately! He didn't reply, so her boyfriend called him & he said "he's on his way". We decided to go ahead with our breaks without him coz we had no idea how long his "coming...on my way now" is gona take.
I'm not too bothered by his absence though. I feel that it's his responsibility to come and cover for breaks on time. If he's late, i'd just follow the usual practice of 1 person covering 2 stations & let my members go for their breaks. But when one member is on MC & our strength is down to 5, we would barely make it unless someone comes to help. Usually that "hero" is this particular indian general worker who's always helping us & taking care of us. On our recent full-day shift, one member was on MC & our hero was on leave. My manager was quite worried coz we had a VIP coming on that day as well. In the end my manager & his PA came to cover us during meal times. Knowing that the 2 of them can't cover us for long, we had to shorten our break times. At the end of the day when we added up all the meal & break times, we realised it's less than an hour! ~ 20mins each for lunch & dinner, 10mins for afternoon break. Despite the lack of rest, I'm proud to say that my team survived it! Girls, I'm so proud of u! It's just 4 more months to go... *jia you!!*
Any other matter to complain about? hmm.... the driving issue. It's still not settled. I'm really so sick & tired of fetching such a big group of people around. Past few days i was on morning shift. When work ended at 3.30pm, i'd drive the morning team home, then return at night to fetch the afternoon team home. Sometimes i'm very tired but i can't sleep early coz i've to fetch the afternoon shift. And sometimes the general workers & AV guys would join.... so i'd be fetching up to 12 persons home at night. It's very stressful to fetch so many people. What if we meet with an accident? *choy!!*
I'm back on afternoon shift for the rest of this week... then I'm off to Kyushu for almost the whole of next week. So prob no job complaints till i return... or so i thought... actually i still have lots to complain... this time about the visitors... but that'd probably in another blog entry coz there's a lot to complain about...

Uneventful off-day
Well, as the title suggests, I spent my off-day doing nothing much.Woke up early in the morning to do household chores. I’m the only one at home who’s particular about cleanliness & tidiness. The other 2 roommates don’t really seem to bother. Maybe it’s because they know I’d do it? Or they don’t mind the mess?
I went for a haircut after that, followed by karaoke session. I had actually wanted to go alone, but 2 of my team members know that I’m going karaoke & suggested that we go together. It’s not very nice to reject them, so although I’d prefer having the room all to myself, I could not really do so. Maybe it’s the age gap or difference in music preference, whatever they sang didn’t interest me, neither did my choice of songs interest them. So I thought I might as well end the misery for both parties by leaving early. I had to buy some groceries & go home early anyway. So after just 2.5hrs at the karaoke, singing only a few of my list of songs, I left. I’m definitely going back for a longer session all by myself in future!
Back home I spent lots of time trying to figure out how to buy the bus ticket from Osaka to Kagoshima. And checking out the train schedule from Nagoya to Osaka. Read some blogs, surfed the net a little…. One of my team member & our wardrobe manager came over at night to chat with us. Then they started shopping online.... but I preferred to go dreamland. I’m saving up for next week’s trip, so shopping’s out for me for the time being…
That’s my off-day. Next week’s off day will be much more eventful coz I’d be traveling in Kyushu!! So excited now!! Look out for my Kyushu adventure updates here!
