What can we eat?

The melamine milk scandal has caused much panic among everyone, including my family. Every other day, we find our favorite snacks join the growing list of melamine-tainted products. This can be quite depressing, especially during PMS where we crave for Chicken in a Biscuit, Lotte's Koala Choco biscuit, Snickers etc.

This morning my mum asked me whether she can dump the Lotte's custard puff biscuits I bought from Japan. I didn't dump it, hoping future tests will confirm it's safe. When I drink my favorite teh outside, I wonder if the condensed milk they use is tainted. When I eat biscuits & bread, I wonder where the milk is from. Haiz....how to eat in peace?

Recently there were reports of a cover-up of the melamine issue. I can understand the unscrupulous dealers who diluted the milk and added melamine to earn more $$. I believe their education is limited to how to earn more $$. However I don't get it why the China authorities didn't learn their lesson from the SARS episode. Admitting there's a problem and resolving it is a smarter move than covering it up, especially when it can become a global issue. Unfortunately China didn't think so that way.

Is moral education non-existent in this country? Did the need to impress the world during the Olympics caused them to be short-sighted?

No doubt they did a great job at the Olympics. An impressive event which no one will not forget easily.....until the milk scandal. China has successfully generated great publicity for herself, greater than what the Olympics did for her.

Now while we wait for China to figure out what went wrong & keep track of tainted products, we probably have to avoid all China food products for the time being. I don't trust them anymore.

F1 Fever

I know almost nothing about F1 and certainly did not share the enthusiasm many Singaporeans had for the event. However I could not ignore the impressive set-up & the roaring engines of the cars. So on Sunday, I watched the finals with my family at home.

The thought of watching cars drive past for 1 hour plus wasn't very exciting, but soon I was glued to the tv. The 1st crash silenced everyone at home, wondering if the driver's alive. Then everyone was laughing away at the comical pit-lane drama. Rest of the race were quite forgettable until the ending where my sis & I were exclaiming "Har?! Like dat also can be grid girl?". Their bulging tummies and looks made us wonder where did all the beauties go to?

The next day, my sis sent me an intro video of one of the grid girls. Quite pretty with a figure to die for. But she didn't win and i guess the reason is quite obvious after you view the video. The top 2 winners of the contest are quite ok though lacking in the looks department. Watch them here -- Winner, 2nd place, 3rd place.

I am impressed by these girls' guts to participate in such a contest, going thru silly tasks (like digging sand at Sentosa) & be a target of criticism by gossipy Singaporeans, like my sis & I! And I'm pretty sure we're not the only ones bitching about them!

News about the F1 finals went on for a few days. I usually skip the sports section of the newspapers but this time round I read on. This particular article caught my interest - "Ferrari boss blasts S'pore's 'circus' track" (1st Oct). Talk about being a sore loser. No one does it better than him! hahaha

First trip to S'pore Turf Club

No lah....I didn't go there to bet on horse racing... The horses were probably sleeping by the time I was there. Thanks to SSO's free public performance at the S'pore Racecourse, I had a chance to enjoy an evening of classical music & get to "tour" the racecourse premises.

Ms Sua-Gu me was very excited to be there. There were many booths for placing bets & self-betting kiosks as well. There were blocks of seats beside the booths and the floors & seats were filled with litter. Poor cleaners were clearing up the mess at 6+ in the evening. Checked out the racing track but it was quite dark. Someday I want to go there to see all the action.

Despite the rain, the performance went on as scheduled. I had a great time there. It was fun trying to figure out which musical instrument was playing which part. However I duno what some are called coz I've returned all that I've learnt in music theory to my teacher 11 years ago. Heehee...

Here's my favorite piece played at the performance. Not from the SSO performance nor a complete piece, but I'm sure you'll enjoy it too.

Alexander Borodin (1833-1887)

中秋节快乐

Today's the Mid-Autumn festival! This means yummy mooncakes are here again! Ok, we started eating mooncakes 2-3 weeks back when it was still the Hungry Ghosts Festival month. Coz by the time it ends, there's only 2 weeks to the Mid-Autumn festival. Two weeks isn't enough to eat all the yummy mooncakes on sale!

BUT Ms Chan is on a diet :( I had to control myself from eating too much mooncake. To date, I've had 1 mini lotus paste snowskin, 1/4 durian snowskin & 1/4 lotus paste baked skin. With my family eating mooncake as a dessert almost every other day, controlling the temptation to eat it was a torture. I've a weakness for yam paste mooncake. Those deep-fried with layers of pastry skin. *drool* Luckily no one bought it otherwise my weight will shoot up!

This year no lanterns too coz everyone have their own plans. I wanted to go to Chinatown / Vivocity's lantern walk but no one wanted to go :( So I ended up surfing net at home. Hope next year's festival will be more fun and I can eat mooncakes to my heart's content :)

Btw, I've lost about 1kg after 20 days of dieting & exercise. Happy!! Just a bit more to go & I can safely PIG OUT in Taipei next month. *drool*
